BBC Northampton Interview with Martin Willmott of Modern Morris.com

BBC Northampton – Interview

Video footage from the green car a few years ago, poor quality

This Dutton melos came to us in it’s yellow gelcoat and a 1600 pinto engine bolted to a failing 4 speed gearbox, it left us with a high performance chassis and a fuel injected 2 ltr twin cam ford engine and 5 speed gearbox and green metallic paint, it now lives in Italy, the red car is something we designed and built from scratch and is now on the road in the uk

What we do..

We are passionate about British cars, throughout history the British have built the best cars in the world, revolutionary, iconic, well built cars which seem to go on and on, unfortunately the British car industry has all but gone but what remains is the nostalgia and the love of those classics which constantly remind us of good times, day trips to the seaside, picnics in the park. Is there anyone who didn’t have a morris minor in their family at some time?

Sadly there are so many of these gems rusting away in fields and being neglected in yards all over the world, so what we do, we find these cars, often without engine, gearbox or even floor, these are the ones considered beyond restoration, you would be amazed at what we can work with, we recondition the shell, we fit it onto our own revolutionary chassis, we fit modern suspension, modern effective brakes and a modern engine & gearbox
so what you end up with is that beautiful old car with completely up to date functionality and reliability.

Originally all Morris minors were built with a small petrol engine, basic 4 speed gearbox, driving the rear wheels, torsion bar front suspension with
trunnions and leaf spring rear suspension and a solid rear axle, brakes were hubs and a single circuit system.

Alec Issigonis the designer of the mini and the Morris minor wanted to make the minor front wheel drive, he built a prototype but it never went into production, we like to think he would have approved of what we are doing, our Morris Minors are front wheel drive, they can be diesel or petrol they can be either totally original in appearance or modernised, styled and customised whilst still retaining it’s identity as a minor.
